Do you chase the jackpots at your local poker room? Everyone wants to hit the bad beat or 4-of- a- kind bonus; however, chasing these elusive jackpots can be very costly.
Consistent play is important in poker, but not to consistent that people can “read” your every move. This is where chasing the jackpot can actually be advantageous. This could be a way to throw people off a little and make others put you on a wider range of hands. Just be careful; too much chasing can be disastrous to your bankroll.
If you are going to chase a jackpot, it is best to have a definite plan. For example, when the Texas Hold’em bad-beat jackpot gets over a certain dollar amount; for me this is over $300,000. In this case, I may see a few more flops with low pocket pair or low suited connectors. Keep in mind, more bad-beat jackpots are hit with at least one straight flush opposed to two pocket pairs.
When it comes to the four-of-a-kind; it is also important to have a plan. It is easy to get sucked in looking for that 4th card that never comes. For example, you may want to see a flop cheaply in Omaha or Stud with a pocket pair. However, it is good to have a back-up hand to accompany this in Omaha. Also, you should have an action plan for after the flop. For example, if you do not get a set on the flop, you are willing to discard the hand. In stud, you need to see what everyone else is drawing to, if you have a set, but there is a possible flush and/or straight out there you need to consider the EV.
Just keep in mind what dear old Mr. Kenny would say:”You have to know when to hold’em and know when to fold’em….” See you at the tables….
