No juice (or cookies) at this poker tournament
Unless it is a guaranteed amount, Poker tournament prize pools are usually determined by the number of players, multiplied by the buy-in, less money kept by the house. Unlike a cash game, there is no rake taken on each hand of a tournament. A rake is a percentage taken by the house to pay for their expenses – their cut of the action. It is how the house pays the light bill, the staff and hopefully makes a moderate profit. Yes, we need them to make a profit or they cannot stay in business. In a tournament, this fee is subtracted from each entry fee and is called “the juice” or house fee.
Lucky’s Card Room offers a no house fee tournament every Sunday at 3pm. This is a very popular tournament. It is an $80 buy-in double stack, 6,000 starting chips, with bounties. Each time you eliminate a player, you receive a $15 bounty. The bounty money is subtracted from the final prize pool. The blind levels are relatively long – 25 minutes each. The tournament is limited to 18 tables; however, they do accept alternates during the first level. I personally like to play this tournament. Lucky’s has a lot of other great tournaments, check out their
calendar for more details.
Remember, that during a tournament the dealers are not tipped by the hand. It is customary that the individuals, winning a portion of the cash prize, will tip the dealers. Some tournaments offer an add-on bonus, whereby players can get an additional chip and the money collected is given to the dealers as a tip. The money is pooled and split between all the dealers who have dealt in the tournament. Usually, this is a small amount – say $5 and not everyone participates. So, this does not replace the traditional tipping done by the players who cash. Remember your dealers, without them there would be no game. See you at the final table….. (You bring the juice and I’ll bring the cookies.)
