For those of us who love to eat (who doesn't?) and also maintain a healthy weight, calorie counting can often be a challenge. When dining out, finding caloric information can be akin to a quest for the holy grail. One solution: burn a lot more calories than you think you consume in a day.
For Coloradans, a means to that end is available right in our backyard. The Rockies offer some of the best calorie burning terrain in the country. Simply find a suitably tall peak, drive to a trailhead (if one exists), and make your way to the summit. Climbing in snow will only increase the number of calories burned.
Climbing Mt. Massive this past weekend burned 1,000 plus calories per hour for over 5 hours. Add that to the calories burned on the way down and the average basal metabolic rate (calories you burn by just being alive) of 2000 per day for a 150 pound person and you've got thousands of calories you can eat and still lose weight!
You may not have the time or the inclination to adventure out and bag a 14er, but you can always increase the number of calories you burn by tilting the terrain upward. Hiking, cycling, and even walking up is a great way to do this. You can even increase the grade of a treadmill to get similar effects.
