Digital television is still making its appearance onto the public scene. And thanks to the government, people are able to purchase their digital converter box at a reduced price with a government coupon. Unfortunately, these coupons are going to no longer be available after Friday, July 31.
The coupons that the government has been distributing are for $40 off from the list price of digital converters. Most of the converter boxes run for about $55, so with the government funded coupon, buyers are able to purchase their boxes for only about $15-$20, depending on where they buy.
Thus far, according to an Associated Press article, 33.8 million coupons have been redeemed, which accumulates to a total amount spent by the government of $1.3 billion.
Although these converter boxes allow viewers to have clearer, and a wider range of channels, it seems like too much money for the government to be spending just to allow people to have television viewing capability. Also, there is no more static for digital television, now when there is a bad signal, the program just freezes and there is no longer any sound. Not such a good trade off. But, if viewers still want to be able to watch their television, and they don't want to spend all $50 on their converter, July 31st is the deadline for requesting a government coupon. If you don't have cable, satellite, or a converter box yet, then watching static will become a new past-time.
