The case for or against Regan Smith
Whenever I think about Regan Smith I wonder why he doesn’t have a secure ride in one of the top NASCA divisions. I wonder why is always seems to be a part time guy, with a team going somewhere, and then it all blows up in his face. Often his problem staying in rides is not performance relates so much as it is sponsorship shortfalls.
Granted that is just my perception of him, without looking at his stats. Let’s face it this is a performance industry.
So let us take a look at his career stats. In 23 career Truck series races he has just one top five finish, along with five top ten finishes. In 102 career Nationwide Series races he has just three top five finishes, along with six top ten finishes. In 41 career cup races he has no top five or top ten finishes.
This seems to explain why he is currently searching for a ride.
With all that being said I think that there are at least two upsides to someone giving Smith another chance. Beyond that there is a fairly superficial reason, according to my wife, who I defer these kinds of decisions to, Regan is an extremely attractive young man. I would think there is a company out there that would like to use that to help promote their product and services.
In all seriousness let us look at two big upsides to employing Regan Smith.
The first may not mean anything, but through 17 races in the 2007 Nationwide Schedule Regan was 12th in points. To me that proves that he can race, handle himself, and compete with the drivers in either that series or in cup.
Apparently Regan was only involved in four crashes or spins throughout his Rookie of the Year 2008 campaign. That is an amazing figure for a rookie. Let’s put it like this, Jeff Gordon wrecked so many cars during his 1993 rookie campaign that prominent members of the NASCAR brain trust questioned if he would ever be successful at the Cup level.
If Regan can make 34 starts and only wreck or spin four times, I would think that some owner out there would want him in their race car.
