Do other NASCAR series need the chase?
I came across this article by Bob Pockrass of scene daily.com. Essentially he is making the argument that the Nationwide and Truck series would benefit from a chase format to determine their champion. While I agree with certain part of his argument, in the end I think it is a pretty bad idea.
I have already written about my distaste for the Cup Chase format, but why would anyone want to screw with the way the Truck series operates. By far the truck series has the best TV ratings of the three series in 2008. They posted dramatic increases in their core audiences. According to the Paddock talk Blog, The Truck series TV ratings were 20% in 2008 compared to 2007. Mr. Pockrass, if it is not broken why are you trying to fix it?
Another big argument against the Chase format in the truck series is the length of the schedule. There are only 25 races currently on the Truck series. While I have long been an advocate of more truck racing, especially in the spring were we go weeks without a truck race, in these economic times that is unlikely to change. Pockrass offered the idea of a 17 or 18 race regular season with a 7 or 8 chase races. I don’t see how that would improve the Truck series at all. I don’t think the Truck series has a problem, and it would probably be more beneficial to leave it be.
Many of my long time readers know I think the Nationwide Series has a big problem, but I really don’t know if a Chase format is the answer. The main problem here is I don’t know if any of us have a viable solution to help fix this series.
Pockrass did forward this innovative idea,” One thing that might help these other series as well is to end their season earlier. Why not crown the Truck champion at Texas, the Nationwide champion at Phoenix and then the Cup champion at Homestead? NASCAR likes its current championship weekend format, but it could find a way to make Homestead interesting. Maybe some sort of all-star event with the Truck and Nationwide drivers could cap the year.”
This is an idea I could really get behind. Having an all star Truck and Nationwide race as the build up to the Crowing of a cup champion could be very exciting. It would also give the sponsors of those all start cars a lot more exposure. This idea is far better then simply adding a chase format, which isn’t all that popular, into NASCAR’s other series.
