"Armistice" - a temporary suspension of hostilities by agreement of the warring parties; truce.
With the words, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice…" spoken In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson, the only seated president ever to hold a PhD, thus established November the 11th as a commemoration of "Armistice Day." Nineteen years later in May 1938 it became a federal holiday by an act of Congress. (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a)
June 1, 1954 Congress, with President Eisenhower's support, approved Public Law 380 amending the previous act of 1938 and replacing the word "Armistice" with "Veterans," making it an occasion to recognize all American
veterans of war, not just WWI, of which Wilson’s initiative was so intended.
No words can ever truly suffice to pay homage to the sacrifice, service, duty, and life generously offered for those of us who rise and rest under the umbra of freedom the veteran’s selflessness has provided. From the Father of our Country George Washington, to the humble foot soldier, the dedicated men and women of the American military are, and have always been, an invaluable, integral asset in making the United States the greatest force for good humanity has ever known.
Yet we've also seen the occasional despicably rotten apple slip through the cracks such as Islamic terrorist Major Hasan who brutally massacred real service men and women at Fort Hood in a wanton act of religiously motivated cowardice. Perhaps the liberal element of the military will put aside its apparent concerns
of being politically correct in the future to honor the dead and help prevent this sort of offense against loyal American service folk from happening again.
Jesus said in John's Gospel 15:12 "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends..." This is indelibly etched into the American narrative; that our brave soldiers indeed loved their country, their "friends" known and unknown, enough to lay down their lives on our behalf. As Jesus laid down his own life that we might be free from the penalty of sin and death, so America's heroes have offered themselves sacrificially that we might be free from tyranny and oppression. Perhaps a suitable tribute would be to keep the spirit of their devotion alive in each of us by exercising the right to dissent when their noble service is dishonored by self-serving politicians.
A friend, veteran, and true American patriot graciously shared his thoughts today in “My Prayer for our Troops:” “Ever-merciful and benignant Father of us all watch over our noble young soldiers, and aid,
comfort, and encourage them in their patriotic work; bless them, shield them in the day of battle and the hour of peril, bear them in His mighty hand, make them strong and confident, invincible in the bloody onset; help them to ...crush the foe, grant to them and to their flag and country imperishable honor and glory. Bless our arms, grant us the victory, O Lord our God, Father and Protector of our land and flag! God Bless America, Amen” ~ Johnny Rambo Lybrand
