Aussies for Bob (Karyn McDermott Photo)
Robert F. McDonnell, Governor-elect in the great Commonwealth of Virginia, was elected Tuesday due to a disparate range of support.
Five Australians have spent the past month in the Commonwealth learning about American politics, meeting the candidates, and working for the election of then candidate, now Governor-elect, Bob McDonnell.
The group, who are all members of the Liberal Party of Australia, traveled to the United States along with colleagues who worked in the New Jersey election. Note: the Liberal Party of Australia is not ‘liberal’ in the American sense, rather the right of center party in Australia. It is a socially conservative party with a belief in economic liberalism.
So they fit right in with the Republican Party. The ‘Aussies’, as they became known, were everywhere; a week at Morton Blackwell’s Leadership Institute; phone banking at Victory Headquarters in Richmond; attending the famous Republican Round Up hosted by Minority Whip Eric Cantor; knocking on doors in Virginia Beach; attending fundraisers; working the polls in the 69th District and even touring the Richmond Jail meeting with the now re-elected Sheriff, C.T. Woody.
Bob McDonnell gave the Aussies a ‘shout out’ at his final rally in Virginia Beach. He said he thought his cousin came a long way from Boston to help him campaign until he met his new friends ‘the Aussies’.
Their trip culminated Election Night at the Marriott Hotel in Downtown Richmond, Virginia for the Victory Party where they, along with hundreds of others and dozens of media, saw Bob McDonnell and his new Lt. Governor Bill Bolling and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli take the stage.
New Jersey and Virginia both went Republican Tuesday, maybe Australia could have spared a few more for New York's 23rd District.
His bumper stickers prove it.
We had the following:
“Another Democrat for McDonnell”
“Koreans for McDonnell” (this was, of course in Korean)
“Yo Apoyo McDonnell”
“Vietnamese for McDonnell (again, in Vietnamese)
Virginians for McDonnell”
“Keydets for McDonnell”
“EMS for McDonnell”
Hokies for McDonnell”
“Independents for McDonnell”
“Hunters for McDonnell”
“Sportsmen for McDonnell”
“Women for McDonnell”
“Catholics for McDonnell”
"Law Enforcement for McDonnell"
You get the picture.
One bumper sticker is missing however; “Aussies for McDonnell”.
