Republican landslide in Va., Sabato says
Republican landslide says Larry Sabato
Larry Sabato, Professor from the exulted University of Virginia Center for Politics appeared on
Fox News Channel and said in response to a question from the anchor regarding the latest polls showing McDonnell’s lead in double digits “I don’t think the Obama visit today is going to make the slightest difference.
“I think it’s pretty much perfunctorily. The White House has all but written off Creigh Deeds and to be blunt about it, and I never like to call races before the voters do it on Election Day, but I suspect this will be not just be a Republican victory but a Republican landslide. I think the Republicans will win all three of the state wide positions, they’ll also pick up seats in the State Legislature and it be a wide, and I do mean wide, margin.”
Asked by the interviewer what this means for Obama and his Administration’s numbers after winning the Commonwealth in last year’s presidential election, Sabato said it tells us every year is different in Virginia; “I think 2009 is going to be a very Republican year in Virginia and look, the White House should be concerned about this because Virginia was one of their great triumphs in 2008 for the first time in 44 years Virginia went Democratic for President.
“I have a hard time imagining Obama being re- elected in 2012 if he doesn’t carry Virginia because if he doesn’t carry Virginia I don’t think he’s carrying North Carolina or Florida or Indiana or some of those other Red states that he converted to Blue so they need to be concerned about this.”
This is a referendum on the President; of course it is. It’s the first real opportunity for we the people to express how we feel about how the current Administration is heading.
For political buffs the New Jersey gubernatorial race in what is a Blue State of late and the 23rd in upstate New York where Hoffman may win given his high profile endorsements including Palin must make for slight tension and nervousness in Rahm Emanuel’s West Wing Office.
