Great Lakes Gitmo
This is a reprint of an email from the offices of Mark Kirk.
On October 7, 2009, dozens of retired Generals, Admirals and intelligence leaders, including former Clinton CIA Director James Woolsey, sent a letter to President Obama expressing their concern over moving GITMO to the United States. "Over 500 lawyers describing themselves as the "Gitmo Bar" stand ready to file the paperwork to free any detainees transferred to U.S. prisons, " the security leaders wrote. "Potential national and local security risks greatly outweigh any prospective economic benefits for states under consideration for such transfers."
Proponents of this idea claim it will help our economy. We now know that two-thirds of the jobs claimed will be active duty army personnel. The Bureau of Prisons briefed Congress that of the remaining new civilian hires, no one over 37 years old will be offered a job and employment will be offered to prison officials nationwide, not just Illinois.
We also learned that the Republic of Palau was offered $200 million to accept just six al Qaeda terrrorists -- $33 million in taxpayer money per terrorists. The State of Illinois is being offered $120 million for up to 215 terrorists - $500,000 each or 66 less than the rate promised to the Republic of Palau.
Other key questions remain regarding this proposal:
To defend our homeland security and answer these important questions, I will offer the Kirk Amendment to an expected supplemental appropriations bill requiring a "Homeland Insecurity Impact Statement" on the potential impact on O'Hare and the Willis (Sears) Tower in Chicago before federal funds can be used to bring Al Qaeda terrorists to Illinois.
Thank you for your continued interest in these important issues. Please feel free to forward this email along to other interested constituents or post it on your Facebook or MySpace page. As always, do not hesitate to contact me at 847-940-0202 or via my Web site should issues of concern to you come before the Congress.
Sincerely,

Mark Kirk
Member of Congress
