When your child is first diagnosed, or if you just suspect that your child may have special needs, you may feel overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next.  Your pediatrician should be able to provide you with many resources, but there is another place for you and your child to get information, services and assistance - The Regional Center.

Regional Centers are nonprofit, private corporations that are contracted with the Department of Developmental Services.  They provide and coordinate services for individuals with developmental delays.  Each area of Los Angeles County has its own Regional Center.  You can search by zip code to see which location serves your area here.

Some of the services Regional Centers provide include:

  • Referrals and info
  • Diagnosis and assessment
  • Resources and outreach
  • Early intervention services for babies and toddlers
  • Training for families and individuals
  • Advocacy
  • Family counseling
  • Genetic counseling
  • Respite care

There is a great brochure available in several languages that can help if you suspect a child has special needs.  You can download it here.
