United States striker Charlie Davies was involved in a severe car accident this morning on the George Washington Parkway in Virginia that required more than five hours of surgery this afternoon.
The extent of the injuries to Davies were not known, but a spokesman for the United States Men's National Team said the injuries were not life threatening, despite the length of time required for surgery. However, one person in the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident happened in suburban Washington, D.C. - where the US is preparing for their final World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica - around 3:15 this morning. The one-car accident was so violent it tore the vehicle that was carrying Davies in half. It was unclear as to whether Davies was driving or was a passenger in the vehicle.
Davies has made 17 appearances for the national team, scoring 4 goals. He played 78 minutes in the 3-2 win over Honduras on Saturday as the US clinched their spot in the 2010 World Cup.
