The Land of Mañana offers many ways to put aside worries and stress and just enjoy the moment. Here are some ways to de-stress in New Mexico without breaking the bank.

Soak it in: The extensive network of geo-thermal water sources spread across New Mexico provides ample opportunities to soak away troubles and relieve the aches and pains that come with having too much stress. Some, like the Montezuma Springs on the United World College grounds near Las Vegas, NM, are free and open to the public. Others can be enjoyed for around $20. Northern New Mexicans can often be found enjoying the waters at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs. Truth of Consequences is home to the Riverbend Hotsprings where healing bubbles up to the surface from the depths of the earth. Pools heated by volcanic thermals can also be found in the Jemez Mountains at Giggling Springs.

Give your body a break: Getting a massage is a great way to let go of stress, but let’s face it, not everyone has a hundred bucks to throw down for a scant hour of body bliss. For people on a tight budget, stopping for a quick chair massage at Whole Foods might literally help take some of the weight off the shoulders. In addition, many massage schools like the New Mexico Acadamy for the Healing Arts, The Scherer Institute, and The New Mexico School for Natural Theraputics often offer student massage at discounted rates.

Take a staycation: New Mexico is home to some spectacular resorts and places of pampering, complete with outdoor recreation, fully loaded spas like the Hyatt Tamaya on the Santa Ana Pueblo near Bernalillo, Bishop’s Lodge in Santa Fe, Ghost Ranch near Abiqu and Ten Thousand Waves, but you don’t have to break the bank to get the benefit of enjoying such facilities. Many local resorts, including those listed above, offer access to their grounds, without the added expense of paying for lodging, if you book a service from their spa or sign up for an activity offered by the resort like horseback riding.

Connect to Nature: If finances are prohibitive of a spa day or massage, a visit to one of New Mexico’s wild places might provide a similar benefit. Time outside, away from the demands of our hectic schedules and constant interface with technology, can replenish even the most deflated spirits. Take a day trip to the Bosqe del Apache, The Gila National Forest and Cliff Dwellings, Tent Rocks National Monument Carlsbad Caverns, or another nearby nature spot in a New Mexico State Park to rejuvenate and connect to the healing power of nature.

Go Zen
New Mexico is known for being a place where soul and spirit meet, and where cultural and religious depth permeates even the most mundane of daily activities. Various faith organizations and meditation retreat centers offer free, low cost, or by donation, meditation classes and Darma talks. Check out Santa Fe's Upaya Zen Center, the Kadampa Meditation Center in Albuquerque, The Albuquerque Zen Center, or the Bodhi Manda Zen Center in Jemez Springs.
