A sad day has passed with the death of an amazing American actor, singer, dancer, and songwriter on September 14. Patrick Swayze was best known in his roles in the films Ghost and Dirty Dancing, and the mini-series North and South. People magazine named him Sexiest Man Alive in 1991.
Swayze, born on August 18, 1952, had pancreatic cancer, but continued to act until he became too ill in 2009.
Swayze's breakthrough role came from the low-budget film Dirt Dancing, a film that was intended to be in theaters for only one weekend before going to video. However, the film became the first video to sell over 1 million copies and has made more than $300 million.
On June 12, 1975, Swayze married Lisa Niemi, and they remained married until his death. They met when Swayze was 18 and Niemi 14 when Niemi was taking dance lessons from Swayze's mother. The couple never had any children.
In January 2008, Swayze was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer and underwent chemotherapt and other treatments. After 20 months of battling the disease, Swayze died at age 57.
