The screenwriters of the cult classic 'Rounders', Brian Koppelman and David Levien have teamed up for a second poker movie: This one focusing on the world of online poker. Numerous sources report the plot will revolve around the online casino industry in Costa Rica.
Paramount pictures will release the yet-to-be-tiled film, with Leonardo DiCaprio attached as the star. Paramount Pictures, Leonardo DiCaprio, and the screenwriters of 'Rounders' would seem to be a recipe for success.
However, because of the cult following --and credit for kick-starting the poker boom-- few people realize 'Rounders' was something of a box office flop: The film grossed only $22.9 million despite an ensemble cast that included Matt Damon, Edward Norton, John Turturro, John Malkovich, Gretchen Mol, Famke Janssen, Martin Landeau and other stars.
DiCaprio last few films have seen only marginal success, and poker movies in general do not do well at the box office: Films like 'Lucky You', 'Shade', 'Deal', and 'High Roller' come to mind. Frankly it's very difficult to make a feature film --visual product-- about a game that mostly takes place in the mind. Hopefully, Koppelman and Levien will take a cue from 'Rounders' and use a lot of interior monologue.
