Countdown to the 2009 World Series of Poker final table: 5 days out
Jeff Shulman’s United Waste sponsorship
One of the hot topics that has been burning up the Internet forums is Jeff Shulman’s off the cuff comment that if he wins the WSOP Main Event he will “throw the bracelet in the trash” (hence my tacky United Waste joke).
Shulman’s remark has been greatly misinterpreted, with many poker players and fans screaming at the disrespect he is showing to poker’s most prestigious event. Shulman had to go so far as doing an interview with Cardplayer magazine –where he is the editor and his father is the owner—to explain himself.
His main gripe is with the World Series of Poker’s handling of the media –which he is a part of—and the way they sell exclusive rights to the highest bidder. A secondary gripe is with the outrageous tournament fees he feels the WSOP charges.
Hopefully the poker world will understand Jeff’s original statement for what it is, and not rebuke him as “against poker” and root against him. Shulman is one of the most respected and calm poker players, who never seeks attention or criticizes players. And Shulman –and his family—have been one of the top promoters of poker long before the Hole-Card Cam, or ESPN’s WSOP coverage: To call Jeff Shulman a bad representative of poker is ludicrous.
