2009 ESPN World Series of Poker coverage, more of the same
How narrow is the ESPN coverage of the WSOP? Well, after listening to the live audio broadcast of 2009 WSOP Final Table from BLUFF Magazine I felt Joe Cada was playing a very solid game throughout, with very few questionable moves: The first e-mail I opened this morning –after ESPN’s broadcast of the final table—simply read, “Joe Cada is HORRIBLE!!!!!!”
So how did a
poker player I thought –and many others did as well-- was playing a very solid game, come off looking so bad on ESPN? It has to do with the editing, and the decision to only show “key” hands. Similar to people labeling a boxer as a “tomato-can”; this happens because we only see his big fight. We didn’t get to witness the 12 great fights he fought to get to that point. If he lays an egg in the big fight he’s a bum, a tomato-can. If we were able to see these other performances we would respect his abilities, and not dismiss him as a chump who was lucky to get a title shot.
The same holds true in a
poker tournament, without showing how Cada built up his stack, and only showing a big loss or a big win, we don’t get a real measure of his skill-set and abilities. Another sports analogy would be a player’s highlight reel: Do we look at this as a fair representation of the person’s ability? Of course not! And I hope people don’t judge Joe Cada’s ability by what ESPN chose to show as “key” hands.
