Countdown to the 2009 World Series of Poker final table: 8 days out
Best final table ever???
Since the inception of online poker in 1999 the large fields have caused the WSOP Main Event to lose a little of its star-power –It would be quite a feat for the top players to navigate through triple and quadruple digit fields and wind up at the final table year-in-and-year-out as they did during the 70’s and 80’s.
There was an exception though: In 2001 the final table featured a who’s who of poker, including eventual champion Juan-Carlos Mortenson, Dewey Tomko, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Gordon, Mike “The Mouth” Matusow, and solid pros Henry Nowakowski and John Inishima. In my opinion, it’s quite possible that the 2009 final table could go down as even better than 2001!
Obviously at the forefront is Phil Ivey, possibly the most popular poker player in the world. But there is also Cardplayer Magazine editor, and poker pro, Jeff Shulman: Top English pro James Akenhead: And up-and-coming superstar Joe Cada. Additionally, since the final table was set in July, Steve Begleiter, Antione Saout, and Kevin Schaffel have made final tables at other major tournaments.
Therefore, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that with their newfound bankrolls and confidence, two or three of the “November Nine” could go on to join Phil Ivey as top poker pros: Similar to what took place in 2001, when Mortenson, Gordon, and Matusow propelled themselves into the spotlight.
