What happened during Coventry girls volleyball's 84-match win streak
One of the most impressive streaks going in Connecticut sports, high school or not, was the 84-match win streak by the Coventry High School girls volleyball team. Well that streak ended graciously Wednesday night, Oct. 29, as the Southington Blue Knights, one of the top teams in the state along with Coventry, took down the Patriots ending their win streak that started at the beginning of the 2006 season. Their last loss came against Morgan in the Class S tournament finals in 2005, on Nov. 19. So that got me thinking, what has happened in the world since that loss. Here's a few big events - feel free to add some more.
-
Obviously, the first and foremost is the first African-American was elected President of the United State, Barack Obama, November, 2008.
-
The Steelers have won two Super Bowls - '06 & '09, the Colts won one back in 2007, remember that...oh yeah, and just to rub salt in the wound, the Giants beat the Patriots in that epic battle in 2008. The Colts beat the Bears and the Steelers beat two NFC West teams in the Seahawks and the Cardinals.
-
Your last four World Series Champs: 2008 - Phillies, 2007 - Red Sox, 2006 - Cardinals (remember the Cardinals won a World Series). Their opponents, the Rays, Rockies, and Tigers.
-
The Carolina Hurricanes or the ex-Hartford Whalers as some like to call them, were the Stanley Cup Champs in 2006, followed by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, named after a movie, then the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
-
In the NBA, the Heat, Spurs, Celtics, and Lakers have won, in the order, since 2006.
-
In the WNBA, yeah, the WNBA, The Detroit Shock won twice, '06 & '08, and the Phoenix Mercury won twice, '07 & '09.
-
Italy won the World Cup in 2006 and was involved with the infamous "headbutting" incident.
-
Michael Phelps set an Olympic record with eight gold medals.
-
Numerous athletes have been involved with drug-related issues, specifically, steroids. Do I really need to bring them all up? (Marion Jones, A-Rod, Bonds, McGwire, JC Romero...had to throw one irrelevant guy in there)
-
Florida won two basketball and two football titles, and remember that awesome National Championship football game between USC and Texas? That was Jan. '06.
-
There was a winter Olympics in Torino...remember that? Me neither.
-
American Idol is still on...so is Desperate Housewives...Grey's Anatomy...The Office...and more.
-
What's no longer on...My Name is Earl...Sopranos...and millions of other shows that made a brief TV appearance before disappearing from the Hollywood world as we know it.
-
I think a new Spiderman was made at some point...and they made two Transformers movies...just think of all the really awful movies though...like really terrible ones. There's a lot, I'd love to here some of those suggestions.

Oh, and most importantly, the American economy slowly collapsed. Well done Coventry, all those wins single-handedly put our country into a recession (I kid obviously).
In all honesty, great job Coventry, good luck starting your next 84-gamer.
