The World Series may be over but Slugger was still belting them out of the park on Friday night.  The eclectic rock band invaded the Dragon and hit a grand slam!  Their experienced musicianship along with a very unique repertoire makes for a winning combination every time.

Slugger rockin' it out at the Dragon

The group kicked off the night with Molly’s Chambers by King of Leon.  This is probably one of my fave Kings of Leon songs and they did it up right.  But don’t just take my word for it: my girlfriend can’t stand Sex on Fire but even she gave this one the ole thumbs up.

Then they go straight into Stone Cold Crazy by Queen?  You have got to be kidding; talk about rolling out a deep cut, in style.  Well, Slugger wasn’t kidding and they nailed it.

These guys like to do obscure covers by classic groups and it works.  Some good examples being “Heard It on the X” (ZZ Top), “Squeeze Box” and I’m Free (The Who), “American Girl” (Tom Petty), “Sweet Virginia” and “Tumblin’ Dice” (The Rolling Stones), “Whole Lotta Rosie” (ACDC), Hey Bulldog (The Beatles), I Don’t Need No Doctor (Humble Pie), and “Face the Nation” (John Mellencamp).

But then the little devils try to trick you and throw in some folky, alt stuff like “Do Miss America”  and “Enemy Fire” (Ryan Adams), “Murray” (Pete Yorn), “Not Behind the Fighter Jet” (Guided By Voices), “Fire Escape” (Fastball), and “All the Right Reasons” (The Jay Hawks).

The song selection aside, Slugger is not only a group of skilled musicians but also great personalities.  They are just a joy to hear and know.  The band is Dudley Roberts (vocals, electric/acoustic guitar), Steve Simpson (vocals, electric guitar), Jason Simpson (bass guitar), and Steve Gullette (drums).  So next time you are looking for some fun (along with a challenging game of “Name That Tune”), look up Slugger and let them throw you a few curveballs.
