One of the most interesting places on the face of the planet is the country of Iceland. It’s one of the few places where a person can look out over a field of smoking geysers or boiling hot pots; yet in the background see snowy mountains as the smell of sulfur dioxide from the geysers (and volcanoes when active) permeate the air. Little churches dot the countryside, or for visitors who prefer grand rather than quaint, the Hallgrim church is its most famous one. Talk about the land of variety! But even with all the wonders it has to offer, it also has its own struggles. With all the natural sulfur dioxide and other emissions, harmful levels of acid rain are an unfortunate reality.
Focusing a bit closer to home, this past weekend AOL ran an interesting article entitled, “Who’s right about polar bear photo?” Taken by Amanda Byrd while on a cruise in 2004, it shows two polar bears standing on a large ice formation in the middle of the ocean not too far off of Alaska’s coast. Without Byrd’s permission, her photo was siphoned through the “global warming community” until, according to the article, it finally landed in the hands of Al Gore and the bears became “poster animals” for the climate change cause, who alleged that the bears were in danger.
Never mind the fact that polar bears can climb, dive, swim, and they like seafood. It’s probably not particularly noteworthy that they are fantastic hunters and have been known to swim more than 100 miles away from land or ice, either. What might a real expert on the lifestyle of polar bears have to say? Someone like, say, the Canadian Ph.D. named Mitchell Taylor who has studied them for 30 years. Too bad Mr. Gore and other environmentalists barred him from attending their global warming conference in Copenhagen. Not only him, but also anyone else who didn’t agree with their views. In an article entitled, “Polar bear expert barred by global warmists,” author Christopher Booker quotes the warmists as saying that Dr. Taylor’s “views are ‘extremely unhelpful.’” So much for being “open minded” and “tolerant” in what some would say is actually more religion than science (http://www.numberwatch.co.uk/relision.htm). It would seem that Dr. Taylor was “absolutely” wrong as far as they were concerned…or is he?
There seems to be plenty of evidence out there that the earth is actually not in a time of heating up, but rather, cooling down. A Public Information Statement issued by the National Weather Service in New York states that 2009 has been New York’s coolest year on record since 1897. But let’s check out the other end of the nation for a moment. In Arizona, the National Weather Service reported record lows of less than 100 degrees for two weeks straight. The last time that they experienced anything like that was back in 1913. Okay, how about bringing other countries into the picture? In 2007, Argentina’s Buenos Aries reported snow in July (their winter) for the first time in 89 years according to an AFP News brief. Chile experienced that same cold weather, while Peru, which is very close to the equator had to, “place half of the county’s 24 departments under a state of emergency.” But as the saying goes, that’s not all. In a heartland.org publication entitled, “Global cooling continues,” writer James M. Taylor stated that, “global temperature data, reported by NASA,” indicates that “2008 was significantly cooler than 2007, and global temperatures for the year were below the average over the past 30 years.” Besides those facts (and more could be found if space and time would permit) Dr. Taylor isn’t alone in his views.
Over 100 scientists got together in 2008 and organized a document called, “The Manhattan declaration on climate change,” in which they proclaimed that “’ Global warming’ is not a global crisis” (www.climatescienceinternational.org). There are over 500 scientists who endorse it.
So why manufacture a crisis? I’m so glad you asked! There is this sneaky but massive tax that Washington is working frantically to push through our cumbersome political system. It has several names for the purpose of utterly confusing the public so that politicians can more easily hide behind its thick, elite, ominous smoke screen. Some of its aliases include "cap and trade," "cap and tax," "global warming bill," "energy bill," "CO2 bill," "climate change bill," and "the emissions bill." Internationally it is known as "The Kyoto Protocol" and it targets countries such as the U.S., Canada, Japan, Iceland and many other “rich” countries. Evidently, “developing” countries such as China, one of the worst for emitting large levels of sulfur dioxide and carbon are exempt. By the way, most people in China ride bikes everywhere -- as opposed to drive cars or SUV’s. (So much for commercial vehicles being the problem.) India also puts out significant CO2 pollution, but it is exempt and so is Africa.
What cap and trade means for us locally is that if it passes in the Senate, (it has already passed in the house) we will see dramatic rate increases on our already strained economy in areas such as heating and cooling our homes, churches and businesses; an increase in the cost of electricity use, the price of gas, the price of food, and in a nutshell, the cost of living overall will increase -- but wages will not. In fact, since businesses would have to pay more for heating and cooling, transportation, manufacturing and the cost of doing businesses overall, wages will be cut at best and more jobs eliminated at worst -- and unemployment marches on toward 10% as Washington flirts with economic collapse and our currency plummeting in value. But enough of the bad news already!
The good news is that there is still time to act. Even as the world seems to be spinning out of control and spiraling rapidly toward a one world currency, one world religion, and one world government, that would absolutely empower a one world leader; we can let Washington know what we think about cap and trade now. And if we already know Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior, we can take a moment to let someone else know that Jesus, “…is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:11-12).
