The House and Senate both voted last week to defund ACORN in the wake of the scandal surrounding some of their employees. Filmmaker James O'Keefe and investigative journalist Hannah Giles, posing as a pimp and prostitute, went undercover to expose ACORN workers who were willing to offer help and advice on setting up a brothel, and smuggling underage girls into the country illegally from El Salvador for their prostitution business. The couple partnered with Andrew Breitbart, and have been releasing the videos on his website BigGovernment.com.

The House voted 345-75, and attached the provision to H.R. 3221 - Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009.

The Senate voted 85-11, and attached the provision to H.R. 2996 - Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2010.

Because both the Senate and House votes were attached to unrelated bills in order to get them quickly passed, House Minority Leader John Boehner suggests that a stand-alone bill would be a better way to go about things.

Boehner issued a press release on September 18, 2009 titled, "Measure to Defund ACORN Shouldn’t Be Held Hostage to Gov’t Takeover of Student Loans."

In it he says,

“Yesterday’s overwhelming bipartisan vote to defund ACORN represented critical progress in our effort to sever this corrupt organization’s ties to the federal government, but it was only the beginning.

“Now that the House has spoken in such resounding fashion, Speaker Pelosi should schedule an up-or-down vote on the Defund ACORN Act without delay. This critical priority should not be held hostage to a government takeover of student lending.

“If the Speaker refuses to act, I will file a discharge petition to force a vote on this legislation. The sooner we can send the Defund ACORN Act as a stand-alone bill to the Senate, which has already voted to deny federal funds to this corrupt outfit, the sooner we can get it to the President’s desk.

“Every day we continue to allow ACORN access to federal funding is another opportunity for this troubled organization to misuse and abuse taxpayer dollars.”

The defunding of ACORN is the direct result of several recent events. On Friday, September 11th, the Census Bureau terminated ties with ACORN, and 11 of their workers were arrested due to suspected voter fraud. Then, beginning on September 9th, BigGovernment.com started releasing the videos of ACORN workers offering illegal help and advice.
