All in all I would have to say that picking games in Week Eight was not an easy task, a fact confirmed by my record (8-5) and that of the other prognosticators I’ve been following all these weeks. In fact, with the notable exceptions of The Gazette’s James Peters and Kent Zakour, mediocrity was the rule.
Arguably the most important four games of the weekend were Churchill vs Sherwood, Springbrook vs Whitman, Seneca Valley vs Quince Orchard, and Paint Branch vs Clarksburg. I went 2-2 over those games, picking Sherwood and Quince Orchard but not having the courage (or foresight in hindsight) to pick Paint Branch or Springbrook. I also missed on Gaithersburg, Northwest, and Potomac School.
I did manage to correctly predict a first-of-the-season victory for Walter Johnson. Hopefully, next up in the win column is Richard Montgomery.
So without any further ado, here are the results of the Week Eight Predictions (Montgomery County public schools only):
I was an aforementioned 8-5 (62%). The four-person staff at gamedaymd went a combined 31-17 (83%). (Note: if you do the math, you might notice that only adds up to 48 games instead of 52. Very good: gameday did not include one of the games in their picks). Meanwhile the five-person staff at The Gazette went 48-17 (74%), bolstered by masterful 11-2 and 12-1 efforts by Peters and Zakour, respectively. Very well done by both.
Record to date: 80-25 (76%). Clearly, I need a rally of epic proportions this week to salvage any level of pride.
