Who wants to welcome summer without sangria?

This quintessential quaffler of wine mixed with fruit and juice has come a long way from its native Spain. It's not only more popular than bubbly, it's more welcome, too. It can be made red or white, it's not expensive, and it provides a nice cold drink alternative.

Because Boston's been smitten with sangria for a long time, some restaurants in the area try to dress it up and create the perception of exclusivity and therefore charge you a higher price. Sangria is not Champagne, though. In esense, it's just supposed to be cheap wine left over to marinate with some fruit and juice, and served with ice on a hot summer day.

Tasca, a local Spanish restaurant in Brighton, MA, does absolutely badass sangrias with unwavering consistency of flavor that won't ruin your palate or your wallet. Sure, it's not as posh-looking as pricier places downtown, but it has its charm and romance. And it serves a great assortment of tasty tapas with a decent wine list (Spanish only). But the siren call, at least for me, is Tasca's delicious sangria.

Prices for sangria are: $4.50/glass, $11/half pitcher (1/2 liter), and $18 for a full pitcher (1 liter). Told you it won't ruin your wallet.

In addition to reasonably priced sangria, Tasca has kept up its "appetite stimulus menu" since the beginning of the year. You get to pick one item in each course of a three-course dinner menu, and pay $16 total. Great recession special. The menu selection varies week by week, and I suggest that you join Tasca's mailing list so you can receive menu updates and dinner deals--such as $10 off coupons, $1 Sangria pitcher deals, etc.

If you walk in without reservations, just ask for the special appetite stimulus menu.

The kitchen is open late, too--until 11pm Monday through Thursday, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
