
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - January 5, 2009 Obama Portrait on View at Contemporary Museum, just in time for the historic Presidential Inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama on January 20, 2009! An original photographic portrait of President-elect Barack Obama will be on view at the Contemporary Museum from January 14 through February 1, 2009. The President-elect commissioned renowned African American artist Dawoud Bey to photograph the portrait, which was taken in the Obama residence in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood in 2008. There is no fee to view the photograph at the Contemporary Museum, located at 100 West Centre Street in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon Cultural District. Hours are noon-5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. President-elect Obama’s portrait will join more than 35 of Bey’s other striking portraits in the exhibition Dawoud Bey: Class Pictures. For Class Pictures Bey photographed public and private high school students in cities across the country; his subjects bridge all parts of the economic, racial, and ethnic spectrums. The resulting portraits offer viewers an insightful glimpse into the lives of their subjects and deepen appreciation for young adults facing the challenges of the 21st century. A traveling exhibition, Class Pictures will be on view at the Contemporary through Saturday, February 21, 2009. Admission to the museum is FREE.
