Erik Janzen's Red Card Production is set to release their first gay short film collection Tuesday, November 17 at Lush. The short films are based on the poetry of Ragan Fox, from his 2009 book "Exile in Gayville." "Stories from Exile" will be presented in a unique format. Instead of showing all the films back to back (like most short films collections) "Exile" will take short music breaks in between each film, to allow the audience to discuss the films and interact with each other. The shorts films will be shown on Lush's wall mounted flat screen TV, another difference from a traditional short film premiere. The event is free. Each of the short films will be presented with a different shooting, editing, or storytelling style, forcing the Red Card Production team to step out of their comfort zone.
From the heartache of being dumped by a boyfriend, the excitement of a new relationship to the issues of masculinity in the gay community, the short films in "Exile" vary in subject and tone. The premiere is being sponsored by Lush and My Scene City. Photos from the films are available on Red Card's facebook page, facebook.com/redcardproduction.
"I felt a personal connection to these poems, they all relate to something my friends and I have gone through" said Stories from Exile Director, Erik Janzen. He continued"I chose to use this format for "Stories from Exile" because I want the audience to be able to discuss their reactions to the films. More than that what they liked or didn't about each piece but how each film relates to them and their friends. "
Red Card Production was founded over 2 years ago by Erik Janzen. The company has produced a variety of music videos and corporate media. Red Card Production has produced the Twin Cities Pride commercial for the last 2 years. Red Card Production has also competed in several local film competitions. In 2008, Red Card Production created "Shades of Orange" for the 48 hour film race. "Shades of Orange" was nominated for 4 awards and won the award for best special effects editing.
Recently, Red Card Production has recommitted itself to creating original gay content. "Stories from Exile" is the first example of this new direction.
Tuesday night head to Lush with a group of friends and watch the short film collection “Stories from Exile.” This is a free 21+ event, doors open at 7pm and the short films will be shown from 7:30 – 9pm.
