The liberal media group Media Matters for America has opened fire on Lou Dobbs, longtime CNN talk show host, for allegedly furthering the agenda of the "birthers", people who say Barack Obama isn't qualified to be president because he doesn't have a valid U.S. birth certificate.
I'm a huge fan of Lou Dobbs. I love his show because he is independent, but he is also conservative, if that makes any sense. He's conservative, but he has no party line to tow. And as the director of CNN himself as said, Lou reports on things that don't get a lot of in-depth media attention, such as our relationship with China, which, among other topics he covers, is of interest to me.
So when I saw the Media Matters farcical commercial on TV the other day, I was miffed. It basically shows about 9 shot clips of Lou Dobbs saying the phrase "birth certificate", punctuated by MMA saying that CNN needs to "live up" to its good name of "most trusted name in news" by dumping Dobbs.
That's not all there is to it, though. Their entire ad campaign against him is faulty. I have seen Dobbs himself discuss the birth certificate controversy. He openly says he disagrees with the "birthers" but his point is that Obama should just produce his birth certificate and lay the controversy to rest. He did not say that the birthers were right, which the MMA commercial implies is exactly what he said.
If there is no valid contest over Obama's citizenship, as I'm sure MMA believes, being a liberal organization, why not just let Dobbs' call for Obama to produce the document go unchallenged? Do they feel there is a real danger? Why don't they go after the birthers themselves, who do say Obama can't be the president? Or even better, why not just let Dobbs continue to embarrass himselff this whole thing is false? Wouldn't that be a better strategy?
Groups like MMA must not have anything better to do. On their website, they describe themselves as a nonprofit "progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media". On their site are all kinds of links and video clips taking shots at the popular names in conservative media: Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, even Glenn Beck. Now they decide their ideological jurisdiction envelopes Lou Dobbs, known for being an independent? Is this what a "progressive research and information center" does--attack someone with misinformation, which they say is the foremost evil they are against? Pathetic.
