All-natural beef hooves and pigs' ears sold as dog snacks and chew toys are being pulled from pet stores shelves across the nation in light of evidence that the products may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.
Pet Carousel produced the possibly tainted treats and stores sold them individually and in bulk under the brand names Dentley's, Doggie Delights, Choo-Hooves and Pet Carousel. PetSmart, in particular, is asking all of its store managers to stop selling Dentley's Bulk Cattle Hoof (UPC 73725703323; Use by 10/14/2012) and Dentley's 10 Pack Beef Hooves (UPC 73725736055; Use by 10/14/2012). The chain is offering full refunds for any returns of recalled products.
Pet owners who purchased any Pet Carousel-produced beef hooves or pigs' ears between Oct. 1 and Nov. 3 should stop giving the treats to their pets and contact the store at which they bought the products.
Salmonella infections in dogs can cause complete loss of appetite, diarrhea, lethargy and stomach pain. Dogs with salmonellosis can transmit the disease to their owners by licking them.
