Kathy Newsom and her sons on vacation at Pike's Peak.

Kathy Newsom, wife of Capt. Shawn Newsom of the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, died today at her home near Granger, surrounded by her family. She leaves behind her loving husband along with her two sons, Shane and Dylan. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in April of 2006 and valiantly fought the battle since then. Captain Newsom spent the entire time by her side as they sought treatment at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston and several other hospitals in our area, looking for medical assistance.  They were married for 23 years. Captain Newsom kept a journal on the website, www.caringbridge.org , which is a site that helps those with critical illnesses keep their friends and family informed and allows those wishing to send encouragement to do so. His post this morning reads, “At 5am we found that Kathy had ended her suffering and took her seat next to our Lord. She held on as long as she could and fought a fight to be proud of. Kathy was the toughest woman I ever met and will forever be remembered for her love of family, her love of her horses and one hell of a fight with this disease. I will post when services will be as soon as I know.”

Capt. Shawn Newsom is a long time employee of the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, currently serving as captain of patrol services. He is also a member of the Granger Volunteer Fire Department and the Granger ISD Board of Trustees. Captain Newsom was an early political supporter of the current Williamson County sheriff, James R. Wilson.
