Kurt Showalter, assistant county auditor, announced at the Williamson County Republican Women’s Club on Monday, that he will challenge long-time County Treasurer Vivian Wood for the Republican nomination for the position. Mrs. Wood had previously announced that she would seek re-election for a fifth four year term. Mr. Showalter is currently the in-house auditor at the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and has been for at least five years. According to online county records, Mr. Showalter owns a home in the area just west of Georgetown.
According to the county’s website, “The Treasurer serves as the county’s banker. The treasurer is the chief custodian of all county finances. All funds belonging to the county received by any county official must be turned over to the treasurer on a daily basis. All monies of the county are kept in the county depository and the treasurer acts as the chief liaison between the county and the bank. The treasurer maintains records of all deposits and withdrawals, and reconciles all bank statements established under her signature. The treasurer collects all debts owed to the county not collected under the jurisdiction of another fee officer of the county. The treasurer is responsible for signing all checks and disbursing such checks as order by the Commissioner’s Court. The treasurer is the custodian of bail bond collateral funds. The treasurer is also charged with accounting for and disbursing all debt service funds for bonds and certificates of obligation funds.” The county treasurer’s office is currently on the first floor of the courthouse.
Treasurer Wood is a native Texan and has been a resident of Williamson County since 1969. She and husband, Leo, have three sons and daughters-in-law and two grandchildren, some of which live in this area. Mrs. Wood worked for the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce prior to running for office in 1994. Her husband, Leo, served as city manager and then mayor of Georgetown. He currently works for several firms in the business development area and is a frequent attendee at Williamson County Commissioner’s Court meetings where he is known to dispense chewing gum packets to adults and quarters to children. I have known the Woods since I was a child, and at that time, he also gave out gum but then he gave us kids nickels then, not quarters.
