As most LA renters know many city apartments come with standard wall-to-wall carpeting. If you’re lucky it’s a color you can live with. But some of you out there aren’t as fortunate. Besides the bland colors of most renters’ carpet, stains and ugly wear patterns are inevitable.
My advice to those of you who weren’t lucky enough to score hardwood floors is to decorate around your carpet. Cover up the most visible areas of carpet in your apartment with rugs. Rugs are a huge way to transform a room and with a bit of ingenuity you’ll be able to outfit your space without breaking the bank.
First on the list of places to check out is Santee Alley in downtown LA’s Fashion District. Shopping here isn’t for the weak of heart -- the weekend crowds are plentiful whereas clean public restrooms are not, but shop merchants here are usually willing to negotiate. If you happen to come across one who isn’t proceed to the nearest competitor. And green rules in the Alley so make sure to carry cash.
Or you can try another budget-conscious approach: stock up on carpet tape (duct tape will also work) or carpet thread if you’re comfortable with a needle and patch together small throw rugs to make one large area rug. The 99 Cents Only chain is one place to look but be forewarned that these stores are hit or miss depending on the selection they happen to have in stock. Ikea and home improvement warehouses such as Lowe’s and Home Depot stock some affordable options in all sizes. You can also score bargains in the remnant bins of carpet stores.
Have fun creating your area rug by mixing together different patterns or colors. And you can change your look as often as you like by switching out old pieces for new ones. The options are endless and you’ll end up with a one of a kind rug to personalize your place.
