Weekends were made for shopping so use yours to check out Sunset Bazaar in Silver Lake. They specialize in mid-century modern and art deco furniture. The prices reflect the quality of authentic vintage style but at considerably less cost when compared to LA shops with fancier zip codes. Translation: if you’re on a tight budget you may not necessarily be able to outfit your entire place but you can score a couple of key pieces without passing out from sticker shock.
The staff is knowledgeable and extremely friendly. The shop’s proprietor César shared this insider tip: everything in the shop is marked with a six-digit code that is actually the date it was acquired. Their inventory moves pretty quickly but if the piece you’re eyeing has been languishing for a while then you can negotiate up to a 30% mark down from the sticker price. The shop’s newer acquisitions are also fair game when it comes to haggling so go ahead and make an offer.
Sunset Bazaar also periodically holds sales on older inventory. Sometimes it’s vintage bargains times two when next-door neighbor Pepe’s Thrift Shop joins in on the fun with their own markdowns. There’s no way to pinpoint sale dates since they’re determined by the shop’s furniture selection at any given time, so it pays to check in frequently.
Sunset Bazaar is located at 2508 West Sunset at the corner of Coronado. For more info call 213.353.0576 or email sunsetbazaar@yahoo.com.
