Sitters accidentally suffocate two babies; one sentenced to 45 days
I reported at the end of September that deaths by babysitter had tripled since 2004. Here are two somewhat bizarre examples.
Cass County North Dakota authorities have charged Arthur Berger with manslaughter in the death of a 2-month-old child he was babysitting.
Berger allegedly got drunk, passed out and lay on top of the child, suffocating the baby to death.
Fargo police said Berger, 46, was a transient who knew the child’s family but was not a relative.
But before you say, “I told you so, leave your baby with family,” let me bring up a strikingly similar case that happened some 250 miles southeast of Fargo in Lakeville Minnesota.
Tina Miller-Steiner, also 46, has pleaded guilty to once count of second-degree manslaughter in the death of her 6-week-old grandson in May.
Miller-Steiner said she drank two martinis and took some prescription medicine while babysitting her grandson. She fell asleep on top of the child and killed him.
The grandmother, incidentally, was sentenced to 45 days in jail and 10-years probation. What’s up with that?
