Electronic Arts recently announced that the company would be teaming up with Valve to deliver many of EA's 2008 PC releases to gamers via Valve's digital distribution service, Steam.
Spore, Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, Mass Effect, Need for Speed Undercover, and EA Sports FIFA Manager 2009 are already available, and Mirror’s Edge, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, and Dead Space are expected in the weeks to come.
This represents a departure from business as usual for the publishing giant, which not only has its own digital distribution service, but also has been known to make use of SecuROM copy protection software in titles like Spore and Mass Effect. The Steam versions of this game (of Spore, at least) will be stripped of this oft-decried DRM software, allowing them to be installed as many times as the games' owners wish. Instead, EA will be relying on the copy protection included in Steam.
An interesting move, to say the least, but whatever the implications, PC gamers have plenty to be excited about with all of these games coming to the popular distribution platform.
