2010 Elections: Rhode Island Governor
Key governor race for the state:
Incumbent – Donald Carcieri (R)
In this typically Democratic dominated state, Republicans have taken the governor’s seat in seven of the last nine elections. Republican incumbent Donald Carcieri has served as governor for the last two terms and is not eligible for re-election in 2010. Governors in Rhode Island are limited to two four-year terms.
A lengthy list of potential candidates has already started to take form but only includes one Republican; State Representative
Joseph Trillo. From the Democratic party,
Patrick Lynch, Rhode Island Attorney General,
Frank Caprio, Rhode Island General Treasurer and Charles Fogarty are possible candidates. Fogarty was the Democratic nominee in the 2006 gubernatorial election. He is a former lieutenant governor.
The CQ Election Guide is calling this gubernatorial race a toss-up. This will be one of the key gubernatorial races in 2010.
