One wall of Sean Tubridy's totally enjoyable Toys on Roids exhibit.

That's the title of Sean Tubridy's Polaroid photographs on display at the SOO Visual Arts Center.

I started smiling the moment I read the sign, and it just got better from there.  I can't recall the last time an exhibit made me grin and even laugh out loud the way this one did.  Each Polaroid features one or more toys, some of them contemporary and others much older -- chunky little '50s robots and '70s toy cars.

The joy of these things is how lively and animated they are.  The toys aren't mere nostalgic artifacts; they're with us in the present, and each one is a character with a part to play in its own universe -- just the way we used to imagine it when we were kids.  Only, now we've got the adult sense of humor enriching that childlike narrative, with titles such as "There's Something I Need to Tell You Two" applied to a scene in which action figures of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia appear about to kiss while a troubled Obi-Wan looks on.

No way could I pick a single favorite, but The Battle Between Boys and Girls was among those I liked best.  A platoon of toy soldiers faces off against a herd of My Little Ponies, with the soldiers appearing to falter, their guns useless against the enormous pink-maned tide. Incidentally, my older brother set up this very scenario when we were little, except that for us it was fighter jets versus plastic Breyer horses.  Sean Tubridy has remembered this sort of thing and made art out of it.

At just $200 each, mounted in perfectly-fitting frames, these unique pieces of art are selling fast, so go grab your favorite while you can.

The show ends December 24th; SOO Visual Arts Center is open Tues. & Wed. 10-6; Th. 12-8; Fri. 10-6; Sat. 10-4 and Sun. 12-4.  Closed Mondays.
