Easel Street is one of the galleries I recently visited while checking out the arts district around the Ritz Theater. I took some notes and photos because I think it's a great place to pick up some unique gifts while supporting individual artists.
This shop doesn't deal in mass-produced tchotchkes from China or anywhere else. Their items come from about 30 different artists from across the country -- and one or two Canadians, for good measure. The focus is on fine crafts, primarily, including glass, ceramics, wood, and jewelry as well as watercolors and photography.
The silver kaleidoscope pendants were a favorite. Made of sterling silver, each is unique and really does work; the interiors are filled with gem-colored glass that makes gorgeous patterns. Small pendants are $110 and large ones, with a jewel set into the barrel, are $195.
Michael Harvey's ceramic pieces, above, are unlike anything else I've seen. Teapots and vases are shaped like paper sacks and undershirts, many with touches of raffia and twine, and the prices start at just $30. You could easily pay that for a piece of mass-market sameness from a chain store, but why, when you don't have to?
