(CNN) -- President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, a stunning decision that comes just eight months into his presidency.

 

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it honored Obama for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

 

Just 9 months into his presidency, President Barack Obama has shocked the world again by being hononred with the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. A surprise to many who were following the front runners for the prize.

 

The President said he was humbled to have been selected for the award. Barack Obama is the 4th US president to win the award. Other presidents include Jimmy Carter in 2002, Woodrow Wilson in 1919 and Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.

 

President Obama is expected to make his remarks at 10:30 form the Rose Garden at the White house. Stay tuned for more develoments.
