Pinch Analytics was one of the first to correctly report in October 2008 that the iPhone 3GS (called iPhone 2,1 at the time) was being user tested. Now the company is saying they are seeing strings of a third generation iPod Touch (3,1) in their reports.
The company says:
We've been noticing an "iPod 3,1" string appearing in our version reporting, signifying what we believe to be a new yet-to-be-released version of the iPod Touch."
Pinch Analytics reported that user testing for the iPhone 3GS began in October 2008 and we know the device became available to the public in June 2009, nine months later. It seems unlikely that we will have to wait as long for the new iPod Touch as it runs on the same software as the iPhone. Judging by the last two major releases for iPods, we can expect to hear an official report sometime in September.
So what can we expect from the new iPod Touch? Back in May, Computer World reported that Apple was said to have placed a massive order for 3 and 5 megapixel (MP) cameras. We know that the 3 MP cameras were placed inside of the iPhone 3GS, so it seems fair to say that the 5 MPs will show up in the new generation of iPod Touch.
As for additional enhancements, I'll keep you posted as the rumors come in!
