For 5 of the past 6 years, our first significant snowfall has been on this date. I will post later today about this weekend's snow forecast, and report on my first day here at Snowshoe, WV. It's all white up here!
The connection to this date began with record snow in 2002 of 7.4 inches. I was doing my last storm report for WBAL in Glen Burnie, and have that video below. As impressive as the first year on the list was, the following year's storm had the same impact. I was working at WMAR-ABC2 then, and remember the morning well. A friend of mine emailed me about the date. She was a school teacher, and won the pool for the first snow day both years. 2004 was a non event, but 2005, brought a respectable amount of over 3 inches for the first storm. Only flurries in 2006, but last year revived the trend. Check out the Doppler Radar estimates and snow reports below. While BWI officially had 4.7", it was much more significant outside of the city. The highest reports were over 6 inches in Glen Burnie and Manchester covering both north and south of the city. the Doppler Estimate below show highers amounts in Carroll and Frederick Counties.
At the bottom of this post, I have the video of my last snow storm report from December 5, 2002.
