Do you remember Laura from the Where to find inspiration series? The beautiful photos and uplifting posts on Snip and Snail remind us to jump in with both feet and enjoy every moment of parenthood.
If you have been following the learning adventures of Big B, you will have noticed lots of creative alphabet activities. Today we are asking Laura for tips and ideas for helping kids learn early reading skills. See the photo album at the bottom of the page for examples of her exciting alphabet activities.
What are some of the alphabet activities that you have done with your child?
We love to go on Letter Walks. I let Big B, who is learning to read, choose a letter, and then we snap photos of everything we see with that letter. We put them all together digitally and it really seems to help Big B with visual cues and thinking ahead. We also just developed Letter Hopscotch out on our patio, where each square is a letter and Big B spells words by jumping from square to square. Fun!
Do you have any favorite alphabet products or teaching tools?
I'm a big fan of Starfall, the online homeschooling website for computer-savvy kids who are learning to read. I also love playing 'Alphabet Bingo' with Big B.
What tips do you have for parents helping their children learn beginning reading skills?
Read, read, read. It is the most effective way to nurture that desire to learn in your child. We also ask a lot of questions about what's happening in the story and we create stories all day long. Keep it fun and your child will amaze you!
