Orlando attracts more than just tourists vacationing for the weekend; The City Beautiful also welcomes out-of-state fashion designers by offering a plethora of fashion hungry teens and young adults.
One such designer moved from the fast paced New York City scene down to the relaxed, beachy central Florida, targeting mostly Orlando and Tampa.
This designer got her start in the industry by noticing the vibrant colors and textures of different fabrics. These would catch the eye as well as interest of Nyesha Gaddy before inspiring her to pursue fashion and found NishiNishi. The fact that one could take something “so simple and turn it into something big,” delighted her.
The two main people Nyesha looked to in the fashion industry were Alexander Mcqueen and his use of architecture in fashion creating perky balances and proportions, and Vera Wang and her many ventures. “She has perfume, sheets, wedding gowns; she’s just an all around business woman… She has two kids, and you wouldn’t think it by looking at her that she’s high fashion.”
Nyesha also took a personal interest in the Art Institute in New York because of its fast paced classes. She was able to complete her schooling in two years whereas other universities would teach the same information in four.
Her home based business in central Florida was a choice based on a visit she made. She loved how laid back everyone was, in flip flops and jeans, as opposed to everyone putting on heels and trying to look their best just to go grocery shopping in New York. “There is so much more space to think, it’s not as busy, and just gives off a totally different atmosphere.” Nyesha also adds that central Florida gives her a whole other area for motivation, “New York has people all over from many different countries; it’s so busy, and everyone is in competition.” She even comments that the only flip flops people are seen in are covered with crystals.
When people visit her for a garment, usually bridesmaid or prom gowns, Nyesha guarantees a unique customized piece that will never be duplicated. She and her client sit and brainstorm on what the article of clothing will be before she starts. She knows she can design anything, stating that, “that’s how much I love what I do.” Nyesha may even host her own fashion show alongside another designer, and is looking to do so sometime in September in central Florida.
Besides local designers, Orlando residents can also look to issues of Orlando Style Magazine to keep up-to-date on local trends as well as see why people choose the area as a fashion destination.
