Fear Of Flying Often Develops When Becoming A Parent
Research has shown that shortly before giving birth, hormones are released in the brain which cause the expectant mother to become obsessed with safety. Anything that even remotely might be a risk has to be ruled out. Though the hormones subside shortly after delivery, the behavioral patterns may remain.
This protection from nature may benefits the new arrival in some ways, but the result is counterproductive when it comes to flying. Travel by air is far safer for the parents and for the child than travel by car. Research shows that driving a mere 10.8 miles carries the same risk flying hundreds of miles.
The following email illustrates how intense and seemingly inexplicable the problem can be.
"It is also time for me to thank you from the bottom of my heart. At some point after I had my kids I suddenly and unexpectedly became terrified of flying - we used to travel a lot and my extended family all live in different places of the world so my fear of flying became a very severe impairment. I used to worry for weeks before flying and it was so very difficult for me on flights. I found your website and started reading a bit and it really spoke to me. . . . slowly but very surely and steadily I became totally comfortable again until now I am even enjoying my flights!! It is such a sense of victory and liberation."
