The St. Louis Cardinals' management apparently knew exactly what they wanted to do Monday night, offering no arbitration to Braden Looper, Russ Springer, and Jason Isringhausen.
This means that the three aforementioned players can sign with another club without the Cards receiving draft compensation. Springer, a Type A, would have garnered two picks, whereas Looper and Izzy are Type B, which allow just one pick.
According to sources, the main reason for not offering arbitration is that the contract dollar amount is determined by an outside authority, not the club itself.
While it was no big surprise to see Isringhausen denied arbitration, it was somewhat of a mystery as to why the Cards didn't offer Looper. He had an effective year and finally cemented his role as a starter on the ballclub.
As far as Springer is concerned, he is starting to get into the upper echelon of elder statesmen in Major League Baseball, coupled with the fact that he is a Type A. Any team that signs him will give away a first-round draft pick, something that is coveted in certain circles.
In multiple interviews it was clear, general manager John Mozeliak simply didn't want the players to accept. He was worried that with the market in its current state, players like Izzy would have jumped at any offer for arbitration and the club would therefore be stuck with an injury-prone reliever.
