Last week it was Yadier Molina winning a Gold Glove, but this week, two Cardinals took home Sliver Slugger awards. Albert Pujols and Ryan Ludwick became the only duo in the NL to win the prestigious hitting award, and Minnesota's Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau grabbed the titles in the AL.
Between the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger, the Cardinals postseason award count sits at three, with a possible fourth coming next week when the NL MVP is announced. Pujols has also received a trophy case full of miscellanous awards for the season, including the Roberto Clemente 'Man of the Year' Award.
Pujols, the likely candidate for the aforementioned MVP, hit .357 in 2008 with 37 home runs and 116 RBIs.
Ludwick, one of the most improved players in all of the MLB, had a career year hitting .299 and tying Pujols for the team lead with 37 home runs. Pujols nugged Ludwick out at the end of the season in RBIs and Luddy settled for 113.
Four major leaguers were given the honor of receiving both the gold and silver, but it's safe to say that Pujols and Luddy are happy with nabbing the latter hardware.
In a tough NL, being considered the best hitter at your position is one of the most highly-regarded honors possible. Pujols faced stiff competition from San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez and Chicago's Derrek Lee, while Ludwick saw a myriad of outfielders tear it up in 2008.
Overall though, the Redbirds have to be pleased with the performance of these two huge bats in the middle of their lineup, especially during stretches of the 2008 season in which a fair amount of production was lost due to injury.
