After another day of what figured to be non-stop calls, it is just another day in the offseason for St. Louis Cardinals' general manager John Mozeliak. With a fairly heavy burden to address several issues and with notable players such as Trevor Hoffman and Kerry Wood coming available today, Mozeliak has to be feeling the heat.
Fortunately for Cardinal Nation, though, Mozeliak doesn't want to "get out of the kitchen". The Redbirds are looking for a left-handed reliever and middle infielder, even though the Hoffman, the all-time saves leader, figures to be awfully tempting. He is awfully old, and although he is still effective, there's no question that he cannot fill a long-term role as a closer for the Cards.
Wood, on the other hand, while attractive, has a long history of injury-plagued seasons, and it remains to be seen whether or not Mozeliak and Bill DeWitt Jr. are fine with tossing him a heavy amount of cash only to see him ride the pine.
Mozeliak, in an interview with MLB.com's Matthew Leach, said that, "We want to deal with the left-handed relievers and also address the middle infield."
I think that's absolutely the right stance to take as the general manager of one of the most beloved franchises in Major League Baseball. Whether it be Orlando Hudson, or a player already on the Cardinals, second base is a big hole that needs to be filled. The fans here are passionate and more importantly knowledgeable about their team, and any stray move that Mozeliak makes won't be forgotten anytime soon.
With the general manager meetings now complete, expect Mozeliak's phone to keep blowing up, while he tries to put the pieces together that fit the Cardinals' 2009 puzzle.
