Jenkins/Saints ink five-year deal
So you are considering that black and gold Malcolm Jenkins jersey. You stop and stair at it every time you pass it in the mall. Like a lovesick teenager you gaze upon it unwilling to make a long-term commitment of becoming a Saints fan.
What if he washes, out, what if he gets traded, what if the saints just aren’t that good. All valid points when considering dropping $80 on an NFL team commitment.
This should make your commitment decision a little bit easier: Malcolm Jenkins and the New Orleans Saints have come to terms on a five year contract.
Officially the specific terms of the contract have not been released, but the deal is for five years and NOLA.com is reporting that there is eleven million in guaranteed money with escalator clauses that go into effect in the final two years of the term.
Jenkins was the fourteenth overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft and has been a holdout for the first ten days of Saints training camp. Between the NFL Combine and the Draft speculation arose that he was not fast enough to play his native position of cornerback in the NFL and may be converted to safety. Either way he brings an athleticism and defensive knowledge to the much maligned defense of New Orleans.
Jenkins as a cornerback for Ohio State completed his forty-five game career with eleven interceptions; two of those were pick-sixes. He also tackled the ball carrier 196 times deflected eighteen passes and had one sack. In his final year with the Buckeyes he had fifty-seven tackles and forced three fumbles.
Our first taste of where the saints will position Jenkins may come as early as Friday when the Saints host an exhibition game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Running the numbers, you may be able to justify the capital expense of eighty dollars for a Saints jersey, justify it to your wife as only sixteen dollars a year, or one dollar per game over five years (less if they make the playoffs). If she still says no, try buying her a new pair of shoes.
