Buckeyes stay perfect upsetting ranked Miami
Ohio State trailed in the second half and battled back from down by five at the half, and as many as fourteen to (21)
Miami (FL). The Buckeyes challenged and came as close as one point three times to no avail. Much like a relentless child asking over and over for that one Christmas toy until his parent finally gives in Miami could not hold of the persistence of the Buckeyes. Miami held on until an
Evan Turner layup with 8:20 left tied the score. That was followed up by a Buckeye shot from three point land to give the Bucks their first lead of the night at 57-44 with 6:50 to go.
Ohio State seemed to be rolling but never amassed a sizable lead. Miami stuck around until they took their last timeout with 33 seconds to go. Being forced to foul Ohio State, the Buckeyes made key free throws to end the game at
73 - 68 and a "W" in the column for the Big Ten in the Big Ten/
ACC Challenge.
The big story of the night though was the ejection from the game of Miami's leading scorer
Jack McClinton.
McClinton came into the game averaging nearly sixteen points a game but was held scoreless for a half against the Stetson Hatters. Midway through the first half
McClinton, handling the ball got in an open handed altercation that the referees called on
McClinton for a flagrant foul and he was sent to the locker room for the night.
Without their leading scorer, and a much more focused Ohio State team after the half the game turned in favor of the Buckeyes.
Evan Turner scored with 19 points and 6 rebounds and 4 assists while
Jon Diebler hit 6 for 12 three-pointers and racked up 20 total points. . For Miami;
McClinton, before he left the game, had managed 12 points.
Ohio State and Miami last locked horns in basketball in over eight years ago when they met in the Big Ten tournament. Eight years ago Miami was still a Big East school and the Buckeyes were about to learn of sanction-able actions of their head coach. Miami went on to win that match up 76-62. Of course their more famous engagement was on the football field in Arizona. Regardless, this is not the BCS, it is the Big Ten - ACC Challenge. Of course in all time meetings, officially the Buckeyes are now 2-0 over the Hurricanes with two losses negated by retro-active postseason sanctions wiping those games off the books.
Ohio State meets an even steeper challenge in their next match up when they travel to South Bend to meet the
Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (7).
