Buckeye D holds Samford to 22
Markdowns the weekend following Thanksgiving are not uncommon, but when it's your basketball team's offense that goes low low low, then you may not be in for a Merry Christmas.
Samford was held to just six in the first half as the Buckeyes (3-0) dominated the Samford Bulldogs (3-2) on the court Saturday on their way to a 49 - 22 win in Columbus.
Sophomore
Evan Turner let his light shine with sixteen points, thirteen rebounds (a
carrer high), five steals and four assists. Aiding him in the Buckeye victory was fellow sophomore
Dallas Lauderdale who had ten points and eight rebounds.
Regarding the defensive performance of his team, coach Thad Matta said, "I thought we gave good effort, "We knew coming in we would have to defend against easy lay-ups and the three-point line. Our primary focus was to take away the three, and I thought we did a good job of that for the most part."
Matta does however see room for improvement on his team as well by continuing, "Offensively, we couldn't sustain our defensive energy -- we bobbled too many passes and weren't sharp in post."
Despite being a division 1-AA opponent the Buckeyes are using this type of game as a stepping stone to some much stiffer competition over the next couple weeks traveling to (22) Miami (FL) and (8) Notre Dame.
