The Kansas City Royals named their Minor League Pitchers and Players of the Year yesterday for each respective Minor League team in their organization. Here are the two winners for the Omaha Royals:
Pitcher of the Year: Lenny DiNardo
10-5, 3.32 ERA, 1.17 WHIP in 29 games
DiNardo, 29, led the Omaha Royals in wins, ERA, and strikeouts. His win total placed him fourth among PCL pitchers and he was third in strikeouts. He gave up just five home runs all season and was named to the 2009 All-PCL team. The lefty kept an impressive mound presence all season long. Kansas City purchased his contract on September 8 and he made his first start of the season yesterday, giving up two runs in five innings. DiNardo has pitched at the Major League level in portions of the previous five seasons for Boston and then Oakland. He played for the Red Sox in 2004 when they won the World Series.
Player of the Year: Cory Aldridge
22 HR, 71 RBI, .316 AVG, .361 OBP in 254 at bats
Aldridge, 30, wasn’t on the 40-man roster, so he probably didn’t play as much as he would have otherwise, but he made the most of his opportunities. In August, he caught fire at the plate and belted 11 home runs. He hit .348 for the month and drove in 22 RBI. The rest of his season wasn’t bad either. He led the club in HR and RBI.
All of the recipients of the respective Pitchers and Players of the Year awards in the Royals’ organization are expected to be at Kauffman Stadium for Futures Night on Friday, September 25. They will be available for autographs at Gate A from 5:15 pm to 6:15 pm and they will be honored in an on-field presentation before Kansas City plays Minnesota that night.
